100% loss of website’s traffic due to Error “Google bot access denied”

Our team of SEO specialists at SEO Company Singapore have recently discussed about a case of a client. I received phone call from that client a few days ago notifying that all the keywords were stripped of top 100 ranks. I thought my client should be terrified of the incident though he appeared to be calmed and unruffled. Three hundred of keywords at rank of top 10 have suddenly gone. What happened? After a couple of minutes to take a grip on myself, I analyze the following possible causes:
Google change its algorithm: After checking other sites, I found nothing wrong with this supposition. On the other hand, I found no update on Google, which means the error was not due to Google change of algorithm. All the on-page SEO modifications are also on the right track.
Google manual action penalties: There is no notification from Webmaster Tools, so this is not the cause.
Penalty due to being reported: Being reported normally will strip the rank down to 50-100 but not out of the first rank of 100.

I found something unusual after reviewing report of crawl error in Google webmaster tool:

When accessing to function “Fetch as Google”, I also got the following result:

Finally, after linking all the issues above, I got the “source”. Main cause to this incident is error arising from Database of the website. They set up the Server in a way allowing access of users in Vietnam but not from any other foreign countries. Because this website content is optimized to serve Vietnamese users and we still get access to normally, it’s hard to be aware of the reason. The risk is that Google bot cannot approach my website. “Google Bot” is Google’s software which visits your site daily to check update from your website or to collect information. After continuous 3 days visiting with access denied (Google Bot is placed in the US), Google Bot suppose my website has stopped working and left the searching result off the top 100 ranking ones to save users’ time of getting into a dead link.

If your website suddenly gets stripped of top 100 ranks, take the following steps:

Get into Webmaster Tools --> Data Crawl --> Crawl Error: Check if there have been many “Access Denied” Errors recently.
Get into Webmaster Tools --> Data Crawl --> Fetch as Google: Check if Google can get accessed to your website.
If Google cannot get accessed to your website, contact your Hosting or Server supplier immediately to correct errors for the access from the US to sites.
When Hosting supplier informs that incident is solved, you had better re-check via logging on function “Fetch as Google” to make sure Google bot can access to your website. Click button “Submit to Index” to notify Google that your website is ready.

After 6-8 hours everything will be fine. Google will recover your website ranking when identifying your site alive.

My advice to you: “Prevention is better than cure”. You had better spend 5 minutes getting into Webmaster Tools to check Google’s report on Data crawl in case there’s something unusual. If there are many errors, you can use function “Fetch as Google” to ensure the accessibility of Google to your websites.
